VideoRay selected the ISFMD Flooded Member Detection system from developer Impact Subsea as an optional feature for the Mission Specialist Defender series of remotely operated vehicles (ROVs).
The Mission Specialist Defender is a durable ROV engineered for precise control over position and orientation, supporting heavier payloads and complex intervention tasks.

Mission Specialist Defender ROV with ISFMD
Equipped with seven thrusters, it moves in any direction and maintains an active pitch to orient itself upward or downward, making it well-suited for FMD surveys. It also accommodates multiple third-party integrations, including the ISFMD system for applications in the oil and gas sector.
The ISFMD system uniquely employs digital acoustic detection instead of conventional gamma-ray methods for inspecting offshore platform members or subsea pipelines for flooding caused by cracks, damage, corrosion, or other structural defects.
Designed for deployment on small ROVs, the ISFMD system features a compact broadband ultrasonic probe combined with an advanced digital signal processing engine, delivering some of the most reliable readings available.
Key Features & Benefits
System components include an ISA500 Probe, Probe Holder, seaView FMD App, ISD4000 Depth Sensor, 100/200m Cable, Aluminum Transport Case, and Topside Power Supply.
- seaView Software – Provides visualization of all readings and enables survey report generation.
- ISA500 Altimeter – Functions as an altimeter when the FMD App is not in use.
- Titanium Probe – A durable and long-lasting sensor probe.
- Integrated AHRS – Determines the exact orientation of the probe at the moment of contact reading.
- Multi-Echo Output – Displays return signals when a Flooded Member is detected.
- Depth – Records temperature at the time of measurement.
Impact Subsea designs, manufactures, and supports high-performance sensor solutions for underwater vehicles and related applications. The company’s sensors are deployed in the oil and gas, renewables, underwater research, and defense industries.
Scott Bentley, VideoRay, commented on the system, “Flooded Member Detection is a key capability for our offshore users. We are proud to have the Impact Subsea system, the acknowledged leader in this field, as a tool on the Defender. It will be a game-changing upgrade for our infrastructure inspection partners.”
Ben Grant, Managing Director of Impact Subsea, added, “In collaboration with our USA representative, ECHO81, we are delighted to support VideoRay in the provision of the Impact Subsea Flooded Member Detection System. The highly compact and powerful nature of our ISFMD system aligns perfectly with the extremely capable and compact VideoRay ROV. This collaboration enables a very cost effective method of performing Flooded Member Detection surveys.”
