Based in Norway, Meox has developed a range of robotic systems for fish farms and shipping applications, including the Axuda Ray net cleaner, Multiflex modular Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), Vision inspection ROV, and Scout mortality-handling robot.
These platforms are designed to address critical industry challenges such as net fouling, hull fouling, and reduced vessel efficiency, as well as the need for safe, efficient underwater inspection and maintenance, all while operating in low-visibility and debris-filled environments.
Underwater operations present significant technical obstacles, including the absence of GPS, exposure to harsh conditions, and the requirement for precise and stable positioning during cleaning tasks. Traditional maintenance approaches in aquaculture, such as lifting nets for cleaning or using high-pressure washing, can be inefficient or damaging.
Meox addressed these limitations by integrating this AHRS by Xsens across its robotic systems. Introduced in 2024 with support from Link Nordic, the sensor provides stabilization, operator guidance, and approximate positioning when paired with depth sensors, supporting both full stabilization for monitoring and heading-only stabilization for cleaning applications.
The MTi-3 AHRS enables consistent performance across Meox platforms by delivering reliable orientation data in compact form. Its small footprint allows integration into systems as narrow as 80 cm without affecting design, while also scaling to larger platforms. The sensor supports stable heading control, improves operator awareness in low-visibility conditions, enables approximate positioning when paired with depth sensors, and simplifies system integration through compatible communication protocols.
As noted by Einar Agnalt, Development Manager at Meox, “We tried several sensors and the MTi-3 was the best fit. It’s small, affordable, and easy to integrate. The quaternion support made orientation reliable, which is critical underwater.”
By incorporating the MTi-3, Meox has improved cleaning consistency, reduced operational downtime, and extended equipment lifespan while supporting healthier aquaculture environments. The same sensing technology is applied across net cleaning, hull cleaning, and mortality-handling systems, providing a unified approach to navigation and stabilization.
As Meox continues to develop automated mortality-handling solutions and enhance inspection capabilities, the MTi-3 remains a core component, with ongoing collaboration aimed at further refining heading stability and optimizing performance in demanding subsea environments.
