Xsens has supplied the high-performance motion sensing technology essential for the OCG-Data zero-emission environmental monitoring buoy.
Stabilizing Marine Data
The Xsens MTi-300 sensor has served as the core component for data acquisition, providing the necessary wave motion analysis to stabilize observations from LiDAR, radar, and other environmental sensors. Because the OCG-Data platform has been constantly buffeted by open ocean waves, the MTi-300 Attitude and Heading Reference System (AHRS) has been utilized to measure 3D movement in real time. This ensures that the environmental data captured remains accurate regardless of sea conditions.
Industrial Grade Reliability
The selection of Xsens technology has been based on its proven reliability in demanding maritime sectors. Nicolas Roddier, Director at Tachysséma Développement, explains, “Tachysséma Développement has been using this motion sensor for more than five years in other systems, and it has operated reliably throughout that time. For the OCG-Data installation, it was an obvious choice, because the MTi sensors are widely used in marine applications. With its IP67-rated enclosure and robust design, it can withstand the harsh conditions experienced in the Mediterranean Sea. With RS-422 and RS-232 interfaces, the MTi-300 is easy to interface to.”
Advanced System Integration
The MTi-300 has been integrated with a custom FPGA-based co-processor to handle high-rate data outputs, ensuring seamless sensor fusion. Beyond the hardware, Xsens has provided comprehensive technical guidance to facilitate this complex engineering. “Whenever we had a question about how to integrate the MTi-300 with the co-processor module, the Xsens team was always able to help us“, continued Nicolas Roddier.
Supporting Renewable Energy
As the offshore wind industry aims to add 380GW of capacity by 2032, Xsens technology has played a vital role in identifying suitable marine real estate. By delivering precise motion logging, the MTi-300 has enabled developers to satisfy regulatory requirements and secure the data needed for the world’s transition to zero-carbon energy.
