Deep Trekker is playing a central role in strengthening Ukraine’s underwater demining capability as part of a United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) initiative to address extensive explosive contamination in rivers, reservoirs, and coastal waters.
With an estimated 13,500 km² of aquatic territory affected, traditional diver-first approaches are often impractical due to zero visibility, strong currents, and heavy siltation.
At the core of the program is the deployment of the Deep Trekker REVOLUTION Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), which allows civil agencies to remotely locate, visually identify, and sonar-scan suspected explosive hazards before divers are committed. Since early 2025, Deep Trekker has supported UNDP through equipment delivery, technical assistance, and two structured training missions designed to build sustainable national capability.
A total of 52 REVOLUTION ROV systems have now been delivered across key Ukrainian agencies, including the State Emergency Service, Special State Transportation Service, National Police, and National Mine Action Center. Alongside operator training, a train-the-trainer program has established Ukraine’s first unified group of certified underwater ROV instructors, enabling standardized instruction nationwide without external dependency.
Despite the clearance of over 2,800 explosive devices, only 1.41% of contaminated aquatic areas have been cleared, underscoring the scale of the challenge. By combining ROV technology with coordinated multi-agency training, UNDP and Deep Trekker are reducing risks to personnel, improving assessment efficiency, and supporting long-term civilian safety, infrastructure recovery, and economic resilience in Ukraine.
