Intelligent subsea power specialist Verlume and German battery producer SubCtech have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on the development and delivery of integrated subsea power solutions.
The agreement formalises a shared commitment to deepen an established working relationship, with both companies currently collaborating on an active project while jointly pursuing new commercial opportunities across the offshore energy and defence sectors. The partnership was announced at the Subsea Controls and Power Transmission Conference 2026, where industry leaders gathered to address the next generation of subsea controls, power infrastructure, and electrification.
At the heart of the joint effort is Verlume’s Axonn technology, an intelligent control and orchestration layer that integrates power, communications, and control within a unified architecture to autonomously manage how energy is generated, stored, distributed, and consumed across subsea systems. By integrating SubCtech’s rechargeable lithium-ion battery technology and established manufacturing capabilities into this framework, the companies aim to offer greater flexibility in configuring subsea power systems tailored to specific operational requirements.
David Clark, Chief Executive Officer at Verlume, said, “The next generation of subsea infrastructure will require more than individual pieces of equipment. Persistent offshore operations increasingly require power, energy storage, communications and control to operate as one integrated system.
“By working more closely with SubCtech, we can broaden the solutions available to our customers while retaining the intelligent, integrated approach that sits at the heart of Verlume’s technology. This gives us greater flexibility to configure subsea power systems around the specific operational and technical requirements of each project.
“Importantly, this is not simply a technology alignment. We are already working together on applications, while developing further opportunities across offshore energy and defence. The MoU provides the framework to build on that activity and take integrated solutions into the market at greater scale.”
Rather than treating subsea energy storage as a standalone component, the collaboration focuses on system-level integration, connecting battery technology directly with end-user subsea equipment. This unified engineering approach simplifies critical system interfaces, reduces integration complexity, and enhances overall reliability. Offshore oil and gas represents a primary target sector, as operators increasingly demand integrated power solutions to support ageing subsea infrastructure, extend field life, and enable autonomous operations.
SubCtech contributes extensive expertise in designing and producing high-performance lithium-ion battery systems for long-duration subsea deployments in demanding marine environments. As part of the wider Gabler Group, SubCtech also draws on complementary capabilities in underwater communications and monitoring, creating opportunities to further unify power, communications, and control.
Stefan Marx, Chief Technology Officer at SubCtech, commented, “Verlume and SubCtech have highly complementary capabilities. By combining our experience in advanced battery technology and production with Verlume’s subsea power platform, Axonn technology and systems integration expertise, we see a strong opportunity to provide customers with flexible, reliable and fully integrated solutions for demanding subsea applications.
“The partnership also allows both organisations to build on their respective experience across offshore energy, maritime and defence markets as requirements for reliable and persistent subsea power continue to grow globally.”
By bringing together proven energy storage hardware, intelligent power management, and end-to-end systems engineering, the framework provides a foundation for both companies to expand their technological capabilities and deliver dependable subsea power solutions worldwide.
