Boris Herrmann’s Vendée Globe journey on his yacht Malizia – Seaexplorer is a solo, non-stop, around-the-world sailing race, employing SubCtech’s OceanPack™ RACE® system in a key role collecting important climate data.
Since 2018, Herrmann has combined sailing, science, and education under the “A Race We Must Win – Climate Action Now!” campaign.
The OceanPack RACE, a laboratory system installed by SubCtech on Herrmann’s yacht, collects oceanographic data to help understand the oceans’ role in regulating climate and the need for action on climate change. This data collection, conducted in partnership with institutions like the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, GEOMAR, and AWI, highlights the crucial role oceans play in climate regulation and emphasizes the urgent need to address climate change.
The system measures key parameters such as sea surface temperature, salinity, and carbon dioxide levels, even in remote areas of the ocean. This data aids scientific research into ocean health and its impact on global climate systems. SubCtech’s system is also installed on the yachts of three other teams: Holcim, Oliver Heer, and Newrest.
The NDR documentary “Boris Herrmann – Segeln am Limit: Boris Herrmann – Das Rennen” provides viewers with an overview of the OceanPack™ RACE® system and its role in Herrmann’s voyage, showing how his efforts contribute to scientific research on climate action.
Herrmann’s work is a reminder that human activities and environmental protection are deeply interconnected. His efforts not only push the sport of sailing forward but also champion the critical cause of climate action, inspiring people and organizations around the world to adopt sustainable practices and support scientific research.
