Teledyne Marine has introduced the SeaBat T51-P, a portable variant of its SeaBat T51 multibeam echosounder designed to support detailed hydrographic surveying in exposed, open-boat marine environments.
The new system combines the established T51 sonar with Teledyne RESON’s Portable Sonar Processor (PSP), an IP-rated, splash-proof unit. This configuration makes the SeaBat T51-P suitable for deployment on small boats and dinghies without enclosed cabins, where equipment may be exposed to water. The processor accepts 24 V DC power, allowing it to be connected to a battery and providing greater flexibility across different survey conditions.
The SeaBat T51-P retains the T51’s 800 kHz sonar performance, delivering full-swath coverage of up to 170 degrees. The system is designed to provide detailed survey data, helping operators identify seabed features while reducing the time spent processing and cleaning unreliable data following a survey.
The SeaBat T51-P also incorporates established features from the SeaBat range, including automated sonar controls, adaptive gates and vertical detection mode. Through the SeaBat tracker system, sonar settings are adjusted automatically to help operators acquire the required data with less manual intervention. Adaptive gates respond to variations in seabed terrain, helping capture features such as sand waves, depressions and seabed obstacles, while vertical detection mode supports the identification of structures such as quay walls, particularly during harbor surveys.

Pim Kuus, Senior Hydrographer and Product Manager of Instruments and Imaging at Teledyne Marine, commented, “The SeaBat T51 has a strong reputation for delivering high-quality data across a wide swath. With the T51-P, we are bringing that proven performance to a portable, splash-proof configuration, giving surveyors greater flexibility when working in open-boat environments. The combination of detailed data, wide coverage and automated controls also helps reduce the manual effort involved in collecting and processing survey data.”
Martyn Grange, Vice President Asia Pacific at Teledyne Marine, added, “Across Asia in particular, there is a broad need for flexible hydrographic survey solutions that can be deployed from smaller vessels and in challenging coastal environments. Open-boat surveying is an established part of the market, particularly where access, vessel size and operational flexibility are important considerations. The T51-P is well positioned to meet these requirements, giving survey companies a practical option for expanding their survey capabilities across a wide range of applications.”
The SeaBat T51-P sonar system is available for order and delivery.
