Explore how SubC Imaging’s Hibernation Mode dramatically extends underwater camera battery life, making long-term monitoring more practical and cost-effective by reducing idle power consumption and enabling months or even years of autonomous deployment. Find out more > >
Power management is a critical challenge in long-term underwater monitoring applications such as marine ecology research, environmental assessments, and offshore infrastructure inspection. Traditional subsea cameras often consume power even when not recording, leading to reduced deployment times, increased operational costs, and more frequent field visits.
SubC Imaging has addressed this issue with the introduction of Hibernation Mode, a power-saving feature built into its Autonomous Timelapse System. This technology allows underwater camera systems to consume significantly less energy between recording intervals by entering a low-power sleep state. The camera only powers up to perform scheduled tasks, such as capturing video, taking still images, or activating lights and lasers, before returning to hibernation.
Hibernation Mode reduces power consumption during idle periods by a factor of 900 compared to traditional systems and can extend battery life by up to 65 times. It also includes an independent device cutoff that prevents peripherals like LED lights and scaling lasers from drawing power when not in use. Users can customize wake intervals to suit specific monitoring needs, allowing for greater operational flexibility without the need for larger battery packs.
By significantly extending deployment durations and reducing the need for equipment retrieval and redeployment, Hibernation Mode enhances the practicality and cost-effectiveness of long-term underwater monitoring. It also supports integration with third-party power systems, allowing users to leverage existing infrastructure. This breakthrough makes continuous data collection in remote and deep-sea environments more sustainable and efficient, empowering researchers and offshore operators to gather valuable insights with minimal maintenance.
