Pro-Oceanus Systems, a developer of high-accuracy dissolved gas sensors for marine applications, explains how its sensors provide continuous monitoring of CO₂ and total dissolved gases to support aquaculture operations and protect the health of fish and shellfish. Read more >>
Intensive water re-use systems and well-boats used in aquaculture are especially susceptible to CO₂ and Total Dissolved Gas (TDG) buildup. Tracking these levels in production systems and during transport is essential for ensuring the health and well-being of fish and shellfish. Relying only on oxygen, pH, or ammonia measurements cannot accurately show how much dissolved CO₂ is present.
Impact on Fish
Elevated CO₂ slows fish growth, reduces feed conversion efficiency, and increases susceptibility to diseases such as nephrocalcinosis. TDG elevation, caused by pump leaks, over-saturation of gases from source water, or temperature fluctuations, can result in gas bubble trauma and potential mortality.
Continuous in situ monitoring of key water parameters like CO₂ and TDG reduces the need for manual testing, maximizes degassing system and water pump efficiency, and enables prompt corrective action of adverse conditions.
Impact on Shellfish
High CO₂ changes the carbonate chemistry of the water, reducing the carbonate ion concentration needed for shellfish to build their CaCO₃ shells. Shellfish in their earliest larval stages are especially sensitive to these low carbonate levels.
Monitoring intake water in shellfish hatcheries enables low carbonate concentrations to be identified so the water can be buffered with added carbonate or the intake can be shut down until conditions improve.
Pro-Oceanus Systems Sensor Solutions
Pro-Oceanus Systems’ rugged, reliable, and cost-effective sensors monitor water quality in aquaculture, supporting the production of food, nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals, fuel, and other high-value products. The sensors can be stand alone or integrated into measurement systems.
The Solu-Blu™ TDG is a compact, user-friendly probe designed to output dissolved total gas pressure. It is available with both analog and digital outputs, and its flow-through and in-line adapters allow for simple and effective industrial integration.
Pro-Oceanus Systems also offers the Solu-Blu™ CO₂, a compact, user-friendly probe that provides CO₂ partial pressure in µatm and dissolved mg/L in digital and analog formats. User-input salinity values enable automatic salinity corrections, and flow-through and in-line adapters are available to support straightforward industrial integration.
