Tocaro Blue has formed a collaboration with Furuno USA to advance radar perception capabilities for Unmanned Surface Vessels (USVs) and next-generation maritime autonomy systems.
This collaborative effort combines Furuno’s Marine radar sensor technology with Tocaro Blue’s ProteusCore™ software to support AI-driven navigation, object recognition, and situational awareness at sea for crewed and uncrewed vessels.
As maritime autonomy technologies continue to evolve, radar is increasingly being used as a critical sensor input for machine learning and intelligent navigation systems. By bringing together Furuno’s radar sensors and Tocaro Blue’s AI-driven perception software, the partnership is focused on delivering highly reliable, machine-readable data for modern autonomy stacks.
ProteusCore™ is designed to transform standard marine radar data into actionable perception outputs for navigation, safety, and autonomous operations. Using machine learning, the software automatically tunes radar settings, filters clutter, and classifies radar-visible objects in real time, reducing the need for manual adjustments and human interpretation. Trained on millions of proprietary radar frames, the software also integrates with marine electronics and vessel control systems for a wide range of maritime applications.
Furuno’s radar technology provides high-quality sensor data with crisp target separation, flexible configuration, and minimal preprocessing requirements. These capabilities support Tocaro Blue’s radar perception software by enabling more consistent autofocus adjustments and machine-learning-based detection and classification in complex marine environments.
Matt Wood, National Sales Manager for Furuno USA, stated, “Radar is no longer just a display for operators; it’s a core sensor for intelligent systems. We’re proud to support innovators like Tocaro Blue who are building the future of maritime autonomy using trusted, real-world sensor technology.”
John Minor, Tocaro Blue CEO, added, “Furuno’s exceptional radar data is what modern perception systems need. When coupled with the AI/ML processing in ProteusCore™, radar returns are transformed into accurate classification and tracking data. This sensor and software combination delivers performance autonomy stacks that can be relied on in demanding conditions.”
