Overwatch Imaging’s Automated Sensor Operator (ASO) addresses the operator workload associated with modern airborne Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) operations. Learn more >>
ASO is an AI-enabled, edge-based platform that automates functions traditionally performed by a human sensor operator, including gimbal control, search patterns, object detection and classification, tracking, and reporting. It combines real-time AI analytics with autonomous sensor control, dynamically steering EO/IR gimbals based on mission parameters, onboard detection models, and, where available, cross-sensor cueing from AIS, GMTI, or other third-party data feeds.
Within the Tasking, Collection, Processing, Exploitation, and Dissemination (TCPED) cycle, ASO automates Collection, Processing and Exploitation, and Dissemination. Processing takes place at the edge using AI/ML detection and classification models, while operators can interrupt autonomous operation and assume direct manual control of the sensor at any point.
Designed to be sensor- and platform-agnostic, ASO has been integrated and demonstrated with the Teledyne FLIR 380, L3Harris WESCAM MX-10, 15, 20, and 25, Trakka TC-300 systems, and Trillium Engineering gimbals. It supports NMEA 0183, STANAG 4609, and STANAG 4607, and runs on a low-SWaP edge compute module built on the NVIDIA Orin AGX System on Module. Overwatch Imaging characterizes ASO’s baseline product as TRL 9.
Across fielded deployments, ASO has demonstrated detection speeds 4 to 10 times faster and effective area coverage 2 to 20 times greater than manually operated, non-ASO-equipped EO/IR gimbal systems on the same class of sensor, according to Overwatch Imaging. ASO is fielded across maritime domain awareness, tactical ISR, wildfire response, border security, and infrastructure monitoring missions, operating on manned rotary-wing and fixed-wing aircraft as well as unmanned aircraft.
