Micro-Magic, a designer and manufacturer of inertial sensors based in China, has introduced the U-Series of high-performance MEMS Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs).
As robotic applications transition from controlled laboratory settings to complex real-world environments, the demand for core sensors that offer accuracy, reliability, and environmental adaptability has increased. Traditional low-cost MEMS IMUs often fail to perform long-endurance tasks due to drift, while high-end alternatives like Fiber Optic Gyroscopes (FOGs) face limitations regarding cost, size, and weight.
The new U-Series, comprising the U5000, U6300, and U7000, aims to fill this specific market gap by optimizing navigation, guidance, and control performance for a wide range of platforms, including Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs), Unmanned Surface Vessels (USVs), and Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs).
The U6300 model exemplifies the capabilities of the new series by integrating high-performance three-axis MEMS gyroscopes and accelerometers. Through precise system-level design and algorithm optimization, the device achieves a gyroscope zero bias instability of 0.1°/h and an accelerometer zero bias instability as low as 10 μg. These specifications allow the unit to serve industrial and tactical applications, specifically by reducing position estimation errors during GNSS signal interruptions to ensure longer autonomous navigation times.
Engineered for harsh operating conditions, the U6300 features comprehensive temperature compensation ranging from -40°C to +85°C to maintain output stability in extreme weather. The hardware is designed with significant anti-vibration and anti-impact capabilities, allowing it to remain securely attached to industrial robots, off-road UGVs, or high-speed drones. Despite its ruggedness, the unit maintains a compact footprint of 38.6 x 44.8 x 10 mm and a lightweight design of 50g, while supporting a high-frequency data output of 1000Hz to capture fast motion details.
