Industrial Supply Chain Scaled for Autonomous Mine Countermeasures

Exail and KNDS have renewed their framework agreement for the supply and integration of several hundred equipped shaped-charge warheads, marking a significant milestone in scaling up the industrial production of autonomous naval mine countermeasure systems.

The transition from technological demonstration to mass industrial production represents a fundamental shift for the naval robotics industry, driven by the return of high-intensity conflicts and the increasing vulnerability of global maritime spaces. While naval forces previously ordered small fleets to test concepts over the past two decades, modern threats and the need to protect critical infrastructure now demand the permanent underwater presence and massive deployment of these technologies.

Under the extended partnership, which builds upon a cooperation initiated in 2008, the companies are addressing global supply chain performance by securing critical components and guaranteeing high production rates. The agreement focuses on the K-Ster, a mine neutralization drone that has transitioned from a prototype into a series-produced combat system. This system allows a shaped-charge warhead to be projected remotely through a water column to trigger the controlled detonation of a mine, keeping the deployment craft and its crew safe from danger.

This collaborative effort leverages over 15 years of return on experience to secure an integrated value chain that masters all skills from the autonomous underwater vehicle to the warhead.
