USBL DAT is a Directional Acoustic Transponder that combines range measurement, bearing estimation, and acoustic data exchange within a single compact platform for marine and offshore operations. Developed as an extension of the Teledyne Benthos ATM-900 Series modem, the system integrates acoustic modem functionality with modified ultra-short baseline (USBL) capabilities to estimate the azimuthal and vertical arrival angles of transmissions received from a remote modem. By processing the broadband portion of modem messages rather than relying on tonal signals, it delivers combined range and directional estimates with improved performance in challenging low signal-to-noise conditions. The unit supports a 360-degree azimuth field of view and approximate vertical coverage from +90° overhead to -50° below horizontal, and is available in multiple frequency options including LF, MF, and Band C.
Its compact footprint and efficient power consumption make the USBL DAT well suited to deployment on both surface and subsea platforms where space and energy budgets are limited. The all-in-one architecture enables acoustic communications and USBL functionality to be incorporated into a single system, reducing integration complexity for autonomous and remotely operated marine assets. The product is offered either as a complete pressure-housed unit or as an OEM kit comprising the DAT electronics with a matched transducer for custom installations. When installed on an autonomous underwater vehicle as an inverted USBL solution, it can support highly accurate underwater navigation while maintaining simultaneous communication capabilities.
