Navantia personnel and the trials crew have completed the inaugural static dive of the S82 ‘Narciso Monturiol’ near La Algameca Naval Base in Cartagena, fulfilling the safety milestones established for its trials programme.
The test focused on verifying the structural behavior of the hull, the flooding mechanisms of the ballast tanks, and the vessel’s static stability. Passing these operational evaluations clears the second submarine in the S80 series for subsequent submerged navigation trials.
Alongside the achievements of the S82, manufacturing and assembly work across the broader S80 programme continues according to plan. This July, three generator sets were installed aboard the S83 ‘Cosme García’, completing the diesel engine integration that operates in tandem with the main electric motor and anaerobic air-independent propulsion (AIP) system to make up the S80 propulsion architecture.
“The S80 programme is progressing in line with the agreed schedule, and the second submarine in the series will be delivered soon. Thanks to the close collaboration between the Ministry of Defence, the Spanish Navy and Navantia, the S80 programme is already making a significant contribution to the strategic autonomy of Spain’s submarine force and to the technological capabilities of our industrial ecosystem,” said Navantia Chairman Ricardo Domínguez.
