Modular Unmanned Semi-Submersible Platform Receives Offshore Spaceport Approval

Seagate Space has received approval in principle from ABS for its unmanned semi-submersible launch platform, said to be the first offshore asset to be recognized under the newly published ABS Requirements for Offshore Spaceports.

The unmanned platform, referred to as Gateway-S, represents a new category of modular infrastructure designed specifically for remote offshore launch operations. One of the primary advantages of this offshore approach is the ability to move operations to sea, which reduces public impact and relieves the growing pressure on traditional shore-based spaceport infrastructure.

The Gateway-S design features a semi-submersible hull form intended to minimize wave-induced motion, ensuring a more stable deck for mission-specific equipment. A critical element of the design is its modularity; the platform can be configured for both launch and recovery missions and can be disassembled into container-sized modules. This allows the asset to be transported via sea, truck, or rail to support multi-site deployments.

The move toward maritime-based space operations follows a significant trend in the industry. Offshore recovery missions have increased from only two in 2015 to more than one hundred in 2024. This growth has been supported by specialized barges and offshore support vessels that provide the necessary theatre for commercial space activities.

To achieve this approval in principle, the platform was evaluated against the ABS Requirements for Offshore Spaceports and the ABS Rules for Building and Classing Offshore Units. As an intermediate approval step, the AIP serves to demonstrate the feasibility of the novel concept to regulatory bodies and project partners as Seagate Space develops its maritime infrastructure.
