Kongsberg Discovery has launched the FS80 Trawl Sonar, a cutting-edge solution designed to set a new standard in sonar performance, integration, and sustainability for pelagic fisheries.

Building on decades of innovation through its globally recognized SIMRAD brand, Kongsberg Discovery introduces a fully integrated sonar system that simplifies operations while enhancing control, accuracy, and environmental responsibility.

All-in-One Capability

The FS80 is thought to be the first trawl sonar to consolidate net monitoring, intake profiling, and bottom detection into a single compact, modular unit. Featuring advanced multifrequency technology, it provides robust functionality across a wide variety of fish types and trawl sizes. From small operators to large-scale fleets, the system is engineered to suit all segments of the pelagic fishing sector.

The solution was unveiled at the Pacific Marine Expo in late 2024 and has since proven its capabilities through extensive sea trials, consistently delivering top-tier performance in diverse marine conditions.

Designed for Operational Flexibility

Built on the legacy of the popular FS70, which has been a market leader for over 20 years, the FS80 offers significant upgrades in terms of data integration, sonar clarity, and adaptability. It supports multiple telemetry cable types, facilitating seamless integration into existing trawl systems.

Kongsberg Discovery’s VP of Sales, Mads Dahl, notes that this integrated functionality allows fishery operators to target, monitor, and control their operations with heightened precision:

This is the first time a truly integrated system has hit the market, with a wide range of functionality and advanced multifrequency performance, delivering an operational flexibility, and reliable results, that all customers can take advantage of – whatever the pelagic fish types, whatever the size of the trawl. To enable more sustainable trawling, both environmentally and commercially, fishery businesses need precise targeting, control and monitoring abilities.

Modular Ecosystem

The FS80 is also designed with modularity in mind. It will soon form part of the upcoming FH80 HUB, a central platform enabling users to build tailored systems based on their specific requirements. This modular approach lets operators combine components such as cameras, lamps, acoustic modems, and active door selectors, creating a unified, high-performance ecosystem that evolves with operational needs.

Scalable, Future-Proof Solution

Looking ahead, the FS80 and its companion systems are positioned to support emerging technologies, including AI-based monitoring and automated intervention tools, as they become market-ready. This forward-compatible design underscores Kongsberg Discovery’s commitment to long-term, scalable success for the global fishery community.
