Exail has introduced Neptis, an integrated autonomous maritime surveillance system engineered to coordinate distributed uncrewed assets across above-surface, surface, and sub-surface operational environments.
Built to support missions including Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR), Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW), Critical Undersea Infrastructure Protection (CUIP), and Counter-Uncrewed Aerial Systems (C-UAS), the architecture serves as an operational force multiplier designed to preserve high-value crewed platforms for higher-priority assignments. By networking distributed sensors across multiple domains into a unified operational picture, the platform provides naval forces with continuous maritime domain awareness to support accelerated decision-making.
Sébastien Grall, Head of Maritime Autonomous Systems at Exail, commented, “Naval surveillance has traditionally relied on sending valuable ships and crews into the areas that need to be monitored. Autonomous systems fundamentally change that equation. With Neptis, navies can establish persistent presence across much larger areas, multiply their surveillance capacity and reduce the burden on crews and operators. The objective is to sustain that presence over time, support faster, better-informed decisions at sea and expand surveillance capacity without proportionally increasing the number of personnel dedicated to these missions.”
At the core of the surface capability is the newly introduced Oryx family of Uncrewed Surface Vessels (USVs), designed specifically to match evolving naval Concepts of Operations (CONOPS). Developed with low acoustic and radar signatures as well as extended endurance, the series comprises the Oryx H-8, H-9, and O-16 models to address diverse deployment profiles, mission payloads, and operational envelopes across coastal and offshore theaters.
Fleet coordination is handled by an integrated command-and-control framework that provides supervisory oversight across multiple autonomous platforms within a single operational environment. Built on a modular architecture, the system can integrate tactical track visualization, mission planning, target classification, advanced data fusion, AI-assisted decision support, and direct interoperability with higher-level naval command networks based on user requirements.
The system expands on architectural integration models established through Exail’s UMIS mine countermeasures system, which coordinates multiple uncrewed surface and subsea assets alongside communications and mission payloads.
The underlying technologies carry an operational pedigree that includes more than 1.5 million nautical miles navigated, over 300,000 operational hours across civil and defense operations, and more than 90 USVs sold worldwide across the DriX and Inspector families. These platforms have demonstrated autonomous navigation and survivability in conditions up to Sea State 7, having operated in collaborative exercises with the French Navy, the US Navy, and NATO.
