NORBIT multibeam sonar supported the recovery of a WWII-era Hungarian fighter aircraft from Lake Balaton. In October 2023, the Military History Institute and Museum of the Hungarian Ministry of Defence led the excavation effort.
NORBIT’s iWBMS STX sonar carried out a pre-survey that identified the aircraft’s location and orientation on the lakebed. Throughout the operation, NORBIT delivered updated daily maps and provided real-time forward-looking data using the WBMS FLS Wide 400kHz sonar.
The month-long operation involved five Hungarian Defense Forces units and museum specialists, ultimately recovering all salvageable aircraft segments for future restoration and exhibition.
