PMI Industries has introduced its new Split Bending Strain Relief (BSR), a cable protection solution developed to support underwater marine cable systems operating in demanding subsea environments.

The Split BSR is designed to provide graduated stiffness, limit cable bend radius, and help protect cable systems from damaging bending forces. Its split configuration allows the unit to be installed around an existing cable at mid-span, without disconnecting equipment or performing cable preparation.

This makes the solution particularly suitable for retrofit projects, field maintenance, and replacement of aging strain relief components where operators need to add protection to existing cable systems while minimizing disruption.

The product is constructed from a corrosion-resistant adaptor, polyurethane, and stainless steel bands. Its symmetrical design provides omnidirectional performance, and the split construction allows the unit to slide along the cable during or after installation, offering additional flexibility for different project requirements.

PMI’s Split BSR can be custom designed for cable sizes ranging from 0.2 inches to 5 inches. The company can tailor the unit’s stiffness characteristics, overall length, and connection requirements to suit specific cable system needs.

Its engineered strength capabilities are intended to distribute bending forces along the cable as load conditions change, helping improve service life and reduce the risk of critical cable protection issues.

The solution was developed in response to customer demand for a field-installable cable protection product. PMI states that the Split BSR is well suited to government, defense, research, and marine applications where existing cable systems require additional protection without major system disruption.

President and CEO Bob Centa commented, “The Split BSR demonstrates PMI’s ability to solve highly specific customer challenges with practical engineering. By allowing installation directly over an existing cable without disconnecting equipment, this design gives operators a much more efficient way to protect critical cable systems while reducing downtime in the field.”

The Split BSR is available as a custom-engineered product with alternate color options and mounting configurations. Depending on application requirements, PMI can provide bolt hole patterns or preinstalled studs.

The company has validated the design through in-house testing and successful customer project deployments for use in harsh subsea environments.
