Lightweight Diesel Engine Launched for USVs at Seawork 2026

Loki Dynamics, the trusted UK representative for MD Powertrain of Sweden, has showcased a new lightweight, high power-density diesel engine for Uncrewed Surface Vessels (USV) at Seawork 2026.

The Marine Diesel MD 3.0 is built around an advanced 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder Common Rail Direct Injection (CRDI) platform. Delivering up to 340hp, the engine is housed in a compact package measuring just 768mm x 620mm x 753mm.

Designed primarily for the rapidly growing USV sector, the engine can also be configured for commercial, defence, and recreational marine applications.

A solenoid-controlled common rail injection system supports strong performance, fuel efficiency, and reliability. The engine also features a compacted aluminium cylinder block, reducing weight and noise compared with traditional grey cast iron designs.

The result is a powerful, lightweight, and adaptable marine engine platform designed for applications where space, weight, and efficiency are critical.

Thomas Jakobsson, International Sales for MD Powertrain, explained, “Our new Marine Diesel MD 3.0 is a small, light and high powered engine for unmanned surface vessels. You want something as light as possible for these vessels and we hope that it’s going to be a market changer.”

David Madsen, Managing Director at Loki Dynamics, added, “This engine has got many applications, but one of the key selling points is the integrated control systems. Everything’s autonomous and remote so to have integrated control platforms for the engine and the boat’s systems is key.”

Madsen also highlighted the rapid pace of technological development, stating, “I’ve seen technology move about 100% over the past few years but behind the scenes that’s probably closer to 500%. Technology is an ever-moving feast, so you can’t stand still but instead need to run faster. This is one of the reasons we’ve taken the decision to move forwards with autonomy innovation.”

Jakobsson said Seawork was chosen as the launch and showcase location, adding, “We’ve been exhibiting here together with our distributors for over 20 years and this is the best marketplace in Northern Europe for products like this.”

Madsen agreed, explaining, “I think this is my 25th consecutive Seawork and it has provided us with about 70 – 80% of our business.”

The Marine Diesel MD 3.0 will be available from August 2026.
