Actisense provides a range of PRO Series products that enable commercial vessels to integrate NMEA 0183 and NMEA 2000 systems with reliability and compliance. All products within the PRO range carry RINA type approval, ensuring adherence to stringent maritime standards. Read more >>
Bridging and Multiplexing Data Between Networks
A common configuration on modern ships involves both NMEA 0183 equipment and an NMEA 2000 network. In such setups, Actisense’s PRO-NDC-1E2K multiplexer can combine inputs from devices such as GPS, compass, AIS, and wind instruments. The combined NMEA 0183 output is then routed to both the PRO-BUF-2 and the NMEA 2000 network.
Data Visualization on the NMEA 2000 Side
Once connected to the NMEA 2000 network, chartplotters and multi-function displays (MFDs) can present the integrated data with chart overlays. When combined with vessel heading data from a compass and environmental inputs from speed and weather sensors, the system can enable collision avoidance and alerting functions for improved navigational safety.
Configuring the PRO-BUF-2 for Multiple Outputs
In a typical installation:
- Input 1 on the PRO-BUF-2 receives multiplexed data from the PRO-NDC-1E2K
- Input 2 receives data from a PC application through the USG-2 interface
This data can then be distributed to:
- Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS)
- Autopilot systems
- An Ethernet connection for network-wide sharingIntelligent Sentence Filtering
All PRO devices, with the exception of the PRO-NBF-1, allow sentence filtering to manage bandwidth and ensure devices receive only relevant data. For example, while ECDIS might require the complete NMEA 0183 data set, an autopilot may only need selected sentences. In such cases, wind data or other non-essential information can be blocked before output, preventing unnecessary data traffic.
High-Speed Ethernet Data Streaming
NMEA 0183 data can also be streamed through the PRO-BUF-2’s Ethernet port to an onboard network. This capability supports integration with systems such as Voyage Data Recorders and Data Loggers, enabling rapid, reliable data transfer across connected devices with minimal delay or concern for bandwidth limitations.
Seamless Integration with Type-Approved Equipment
By combining Actisense PRO Series devices, vessel operators can achieve a unified network where NMEA 0183 and NMEA 2000 systems operate together efficiently. The result is dependable data sharing, effective device communication, and enhanced situational awareness, backed by the assurance of RINA type approval.
