Thales is set to enhance the anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities of the French Navy by supplying several hundred SonoFlash sonobuoys.

SonoFlash sonobuoys are expendable, air-droppable sonar systems designed for anti-submarine warfare. They are thought to be the only sonobuoys to feature both active and passive operating modes, making them versatile tools for maritime defense.

Designed for advanced underwater detection, SonoFlash integrates seamlessly into modern ASW operations, providing improved submarine tracking and situational awareness. This deployment marks a significant step in France’s maritime defense strategy.

Equipped with a powerful low-frequency transmitter, SonoFlash sonobuoys enable extensive underwater scanning, whilst a highly directional passive receiver ensures precise acoustic data collection.

When combined with Thales’ FLASH dipping sonar, SonoFlash enhances airborne ASW platforms by significantly improving detection range and adaptability against evasive submarine maneuvers. Additionally, advanced communication capabilities allow seamless integration with ships, aircraft, and ASW processing systems, ensuring real-time operational effectiveness.

Primary applications include real-time submarine detection, tracking, and tactical response enhancement. Key features include:

  • Dual-mode operation: active low-frequency emitter and high-directivity passive receiver
  • Extended detection range for submarine tracking
  • High-performance communication system for seamless data transmission
  • Compatible with surface ships, aircraft, and acoustic support centers

Thales has a long-standing reputation for delivering cutting-edge underwater defense solutions, with a portfolio that includes the renowned CAPTAS towed sonar and FLASH dipping sonar.

“Through its SonoFlash sonobuoy and the CAPTAS and FLASH sonars, Thales is proud to contribute to the development of the French anti-submarine warfare sector. The excellence of Thales’s offerings solutions in this field is recognised worldwide and is being put to the service of the French Navy in a context of renewed tensions at sea.” said Sébastien Guérémy, Vice President of Underwater Systems activities, Thales.
