Bloodhound Tracking Device (BTD) has announced a major enhancement to its security-in-transit platform by integrating an Iridium satellite transceiver, in partnership with MetOcean Telematics, to provide uninterrupted global tracking and alert capabilities.
The upgrade is designed to ensure supply-chain visibility even in remote or obstructed environments where traditional networks may fail, addressing the sharply rising global cargo theft rates. BTD’s technology uses a proprietary Disruption Tolerant Network (DTN) and mesh architecture, which allows devices to transmit data even when buried deep within container stacks or train cars. The global cellular and GPS capabilities of the BTD units are now strengthened by Iridium’s worldwide coverage.
The integration provides true pole-to-pole coverage, as the Iridium low Earth orbit constellation delivers reliable connectivity from remote oceans to the polar regions. BTD’s DTN and mesh paths remain preferred when available, with Iridium providing a robust fallback when other links are unavailable. This synergy ensures sensor continuity for temperature, gas, noise, and tamper detection, even when isolated from mesh or cellular networks.
Curtis Spencer, CEO of Bloodhound Tracking Device, commented, “At BTD, our core value is full visibility without compromise. By integrating Iridium Short Burst Data® (SBD®) with MetOcean’s engineering support, we bring that value to life — ensuring that even in the most remote or network-challenged regions, customers’ assets remain seen, monitored, and secure.”
The Iridium integration was executed without compromising the device’s reliability or endurance, and the satellite connectivity is included as part of BTD’s existing subscription service.
Tony Chedrawy, CEO of MetOcean, said, “MetOcean has long been recognized for deep expertise in Iridium-based telemetry systems. This collaboration demonstrates how our satellite integration capabilities complement BTD’s next-generation tracking architecture. The certified approach ensures the satellite path is seamlessly built into the BTD system.”
The enhancement provides critical capabilities for remote shipping and assets, enabling alerts from containers or equipment mid-ocean or off-grid. It also improves supply chain and logistics functions by delivering real-time data that enhances ETA predictions, reduces “black hole” dwell time, and mitigates theft risk.
Ian Itz, Executive Director and General Manager, IoT, Iridium, added, “Reliable connectivity anywhere is what Iridium does best. Seeing our SBD service integrated into BTD devices shows how satellite services can empower global visibility.”
The Iridium-enabled BTD is available for new deployments and as a retrofit/upgrade path for existing active units.
