Kongsberg Discovery has developed a north-seeking Micro-Electromechanical System (MEMS) designed to provide accurate navigation in environments where GNSS signals are unavailable or compromised.

The innovation represents a significant step forward in resilient and accessible navigation technology. By providing a reliable method for determining heading and position without continuous external aiding, the system addresses a critical need for platforms operating in challenging domains. Kongsberg Discovery views the upcoming product as a gamechanger for the inertial navigation industry with far-reaching potential across multiple sectors.

The technology is expected to be integrated into a diverse array of platforms, including air and surface-based drones, subsea Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs), and Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs). Beyond autonomous platforms, the development holds significant implications for defense systems, marine surveying, and energy applications.

Ane Dalsnes Storsæter, Vice President Inertial Solutions at Kongsberg Discovery, said, “In many ways, this opens up a whole range of new applications within navigation. From air and surface-based drones, to subsea ROVs and AUVs, to defence systems, marine surveying, energy applications, and beyond. The device allows for reliable, precise navigation without continuous aiding.”

The company showcased the new solution at this year’s Oceanology International in London. During the event, Kongsberg Discovery conducted live demonstrations and workshops to illustrate the verified performance metrics of the system to industry professionals.
