Clean maritime company Artemis Technologies has launched the Artemis EF-12 Pilot, reportedly representing the world’s first fully electric hydrofoil pilot vessel to enter sea trials.
The first-in-class vessel is purpose-designed for the rigorous demands of daily pilot transfer operations by combining zero-emission propulsion with required speed, control, and robustness. By utilizing hydrofoil technology to lift the hull out of the water, the vessel significantly reduces hydrodynamic drag and wake, which delivers a smoother ride, enhanced handling, and lower energy consumption compared to conventional pilot boats.
This design builds on over four years of operational experience with the company’s Artemis eFoiler system, ensuring predictable handling and stability across varying weather and sea states. To support safe and consistent transfers, the vessel features an optimized layout, enhanced visibility, specific deck arrangements, and an active flight control system that maintains stability during critical operational moments.
As global ports invest in high-performance, cleaner solutions, international demand has grown, with secured customers including Brabo in Belgium, the Swedish Maritime Administration, Noatum Maritime in Abu Dhabi, and the Port of Tyne in the UK.
Dr Iain Percy, CEO of Artemis Technologies, said, “Pilotage places very specific demands on a vessel. The Artemis EF‑12 Pilot applies proven foiling technology to meet those demands, delivering an efficient, fully electric solution that supports pilots, crews and port operations globally.”
The launch expands the company’s portfolio of electric foiling vessels, providing pilot authorities with a practical pathway toward decarbonization without compromising operational performance.
